Effective January 1, 2009, the Town of Southampton
enacted
landmark energy efficiency mandates for new pools and for replacement equipment.
Town-wide projections show that even if only 10% of the Town’s existing and new pools upgrade, we will be saving over 2,000 tons of carbon that otherwise would have gone into the atmosphere.
And we’ll save enough energy to power over 140 typical Long Island homes!
Spring & Summer Activities recommends these good-sense practices are followed throughout the East End, not just in the Town of Southampton. A small up-front added cost to construction or replacement equipment pays itself back within a few years in energy, water and chemical savings.
- Multi-speed pumps reduce energy consumption by at least 70%
- Properly sized filters reduce water and chemical waste
- Electronic-ignition heaters are more efficient, saving fossil fuels
- Solar blankets keep pools at least 10 degrees warmer, and prevent expensive heat loss through vaporation.
(They keep the pool cleaner, too!)
- Better plumbing practices allow water to flow more smoothly through the system.
The decreased resistance in the water flow saves energy.
- Optional salt-water or mineral systems dramatically reduce chemical use
(see more on our “Equipment & Accessories” page).
Energy efficiency may be the law only in the Town of Southampton,
but it’s the responsible thing to do for all pools.
